According to my mechanic: There are two fan relays that activate the
cooling fan. The first one is low speed and fused. The second is high
speed and not fused. The second one is to keep you from getting stranded
and only activates if the first can't, and we owners are supposed to know
that the loud sound means an immediate trip to the repair shop. The low
speed relay had an internal failure that had something to do with not being
able to cope with the bad fan motor bearings. The wiring burned up when the
fan seized up and the car quit. My wife was stranded and called a tow truck
whose operater didn't know he needed to step on the brake pedal to shift to
neutral but was able to shift anyway and cost me a bunch more!
