Re: CGT off throttle or engine braking noise, etc.

You will probably have a lot of fun driving a 4kq, but also keep in mind
that your Coupe GT was one of the best handling FWD cars in its day. The
big benefit IMHO for the AWD is the fact that you are less likely to get
front wheelspin on takeoff when turning. The other benefit of quattro
is that you don't need to worry so much about adverse effects when the
weather changes.

Getting back to your motor mount issue ... you are correct that the rotation
of the engine does produce a torque that would tend to want to shift the
engine left and right, but by far the major effect on a FWD engine is the
reaction to the torque applied to the wheels, which causes a fore-aft motion.
One time when I had my Audi Fox serviced they forgot to tighten the front
"engine mount" (I think they really call it a torque stop) and non aggres-
sive driving in first gear caused enough engine motion for the crank pulley
to start touching the grate under the oil pan! I'd recommend that you check
to see that everything is properly installed up front. The torque stop is
mounted low on the engine block passenger side at the level of the bumper.
You should find a cast knob attached to the engine block which has a rubber
bumper on the end. This bumper fits inside an inverted, squared-off u-
channel that is attached to the front part of the engine compartment. This
may or may not be your problem ... you may also have a problem with the
engine mounts you describe. My experience with the urQ was that the right
side motor mount cooked and crumbled away, which reduced the clearance
between the oil pan and the subframe to to point where the two would con-
tact at certain times, coupling noise into the body as you describe. Some
people think that failure of this engine mount is one of the prime causes
for broken EM studs ... I'm not necessarily convinced of that though ...
