New Multi-Valve Engines w\Variable Intake Manifold and Camshaft Control (long)
INTRODUCTION: Audi uses the variable intake manifold and camshaft
control to optimise the five-valve engine.
The maximum torque,torque curve and output of an engine depend,inter
alia,on the lenght of the intake manifold through which air flows to the
intake valves.On the one hand a long intake manifold provides the
foundation for high torque from low engine speeds.On the other hand the
trade-off you have to pay for this advantage is less engine power at
high speed.Opting for a short intake manifold with low flow
resistance,you will enjoy subtancial output at high engine speeds,but
again the price will be low torque at low speeds and,quite generally,a
rather inadecuate torque curve.
