Re : 4KTQ bolt-on

I've been thinking about this type of mod every now and then, what is the cheapest and
easiest way to improve a 4kq or GT. Doing anything to improve the engine and keep it NA
will cost quite a bit especially if you have to open it up. Of course, you then think turbo
and I started going over the OEM turbo stuff.

Here's a plan, starting point, 5cyl 4kq or GT engine, 2.2l, 8.6:1 CR, then add:
5KT intake manifold and throttle body
  5kT exhaust manifold and wastegate
  5kT downpipe
  K26 or preferable K24 turbo
  turbo oil and water plumbing
  5kT intercooler
5kT intake air boot and plumbing
  5kT turbo outlet plumbing

Bolt on all the above, set wastegate to run, say, 5-6 psi. This should work. Questions
and problems would be enough fuel from stock 4kQ CIS-E? relocation of battery?
interference of RF tie rod w/ downpipe. interference w/ ac compressor?

Sure you would be missing the knock sensor and piston cooling oil squirters, but it is a
bolt on project. I would believe if you kept the boost low, you could avoid the
grenade scenario. And with the keen shopping ability of, say Dave Head, you could
probably find all the above for <$1000.

Step 2 would be to add an oil cooler, 5kT FD and injectors and maybe even the
MAC-11 ECU and harness.

The later 2.3l 10:1CR engines would take a bit more thought, but here you are already
starting with a knock sensor. Brendan, should you wish to accept this assign....

Just my guess at the cheapest way to turbo your 4kq, it just might be crazy enough
to work.
