[Q] On Timing and Exhaust

Hi,
I have a couple of question on my quest to make my 87 4kcsq a little
more formidable. Thanks in advance for all ideas.

1) My car is in the shop, getttin new rotors and pads. I have asked this
guy about increasing my timing to get a little more oomph at higher RPM.
He said he can do that and metioned something like 10 degrees or so. Is
that too much? Has anyone done similar, if so by how much? Any thoughts
or suggestions would help.

2) I am still trying to a new Exhaust on my quattro. I have had some
great feedback from other subscribers (namely Doyt and Pat Martin). I
keep hearing about 2 1/2" almunized pipes from cat back to a central
well baffled muffler. Anyway, I took my car to a 'reputable' muffler
shop and asked them about my options. They said that it is IMPOSSIBLE to
put a 2 1/2" pipe on my 87 4000 CS Quattro, because there is not enough
room for it to go over the rear diffrential. Can anyone tell me of a
different experience? I live in Moline, IL and I am willing to drive a
little (3 hrs) to get this job done. Any ideas?
