wet feet in '89 100

I've become a new-to-Audi owner of a used '89 100 (fwd) with 104K. Leather,
power seats, sunroof, computer. Runs very nice and looks great. It *is*
making me a believer and on the lookout for a quattro.

However there is a persistent rain leak that appears to be related to
well-hidden body damage that was not evident at time of purchase. The car
has had damage at the drivers-side front pillar (although no signs are
visible 'till some underdash trim panels and the fender liner are removed).
This damage seems to have left the vehicle with an annoying habit of
filling the left-side floor with water after heavy rain.

Some of the rain leakage was traced to the fusebox, which was not firmly
sealed against the mounting shelf, which had been somewhat buckled
upward--probably during the repair. This area has now been sealed up by
applying caulk around the fusebox base. However water *still* finds its way
onto the floor from somewhere else--my guess is that it enters fairly low
(below the carpet)--and toward the center of the firewall.

The plastic cover (shield) above the firewall is in place and reasonably
intact. I suspect that when water runs off to the driver's side, it is kept
from flowing outside (normal path to the ground being inside the front
fender?) by the aformentioned upward buckling of the fusebox shelf.
Instead, much water may run inward--toward the center of the firewall. I'll
be removing the plastic cover to have a look in that area. Are there some
obvious places on the firewall where water would (or should) be able to
enter the interior?

BTW, I've verified that the sunroof drain is working OK.

I guess this is sort of a unique problem :-( so I'm not too optimistic
about getting much info--in spite of the wealth of knowledge that appears
to be available from this list.
