Dan,

Minor detail, but having one's wife/girlfriend lock you in the car is an
unwise diagnostic practice.  I've had several that might just leave you
there till you agree to buy a new car and stop wrenching the old beloved
one.

How about placing a bright light in the trunk and observing from the
outside in a dark place.
