question about AC on 87 4KCSQ

I have just noticed something with my AC in the 87 4KCSQ.  Actually, I just
kicked in on for the season.  The AC compressor, I am guessing will CLICK
on and off.  I can hear a noticeable CLICK from behind the dash around the
glove box.  Great cool air comes out of the vents and all, but then about
7-10 minutes later, I hear the CLICK again and then just normal air is
coming out.  Then, about 2 minutes after that, CLICK again and a whoosh of
cool air as before.  Is this normal, or is there something wrong with the
compressor?  Would RECHARGING the AC unit help this at all, and is there a
check that one can make to see performance before the mechanic tells me I
need a new one.  More on that later.
