4KQ steering rack - source?

Hello all, 

my mechanic tells me that the source of my '85 4KQ's excessive wandering on road irregularities is due to a "worn steering rack".  (I've replaced just about everything else!)  He says the new audi parts pricing is extremely spendy. 

 Any good leads on cost-effective supplier/pricing for "steering rack" parts.  Maybe from a low-miles '87 from a wrecking yard?

As long as I'm asking, my seat broke a bit at the last PIR track day, so I'm looking for available used Recaros or the like, perhaps from a wrecked VW 16V ---one yard has me on a wait list for $300/pair, but who knows when.
