Had the same problem years ago on the '89.  I tapped a light pole, no
visible damage to the car, but months later, started seeing some rust. 
The hardware for the trim strip had shifted just enough to scratch
through the paint and zinc.  It was all surface rust, and a body shop
fixed it quite inexpensively.  The only paint required was around the
mounting hardware (completely hidden from view), so just cleaned off the
rust, primed, and did touch-up.
