I have seen (as a postmaster and as a Fidonet hub) around two dozen of these 
things.  The most infamous was the 'Craig Shergold business card appeal'.  I 
have yet to see a genuine one.  I feel it is always a good idea, if asked to 
forward such a note, to check the appropriate abuse newsgroups.
