Noise coming from engine

I've recently had quite a bit of mechanical work done to my engine, like
changing the timing belt and head gaskets on my '92 100S 2.8 V6. Every so
often when I start up the engine while it is cold, it makes a weird noise.
The whining noise sounds similar to the sound a manual transmission makes
when it is in reverse. This noise hangs around for about The car did not make
