N/A I-5 oil pump housing removal
Haudi,(sorry I copied that, but I like)
I know this project seems to be taking forever to all of you, but
that's because...it is! Believe me! Although I am missing some serious
'driving days!', I am not overly concerned and am purposely taking my
time....I have my reasons.... :-(
And now for the daily questions:
There's a significant amount of oil/dirt/rust/scum that I have found
all around the bottom of the timing belt area. I'm not sure if the
serious amount of wet black crude was caused by a recently leaking water
pump and years of dirt/oil build-up or worse, like front seal/oil pump
gasket leakage?
I have a new crankshaft seal, but it seems difficult to do it without
removing the front oil pump housing, if it's even possible(I think I
need a tool/extractor..are they expensive?). But that doesn't bother me,
because I definitely want to do both the seal and oil pump housing
gasket while all's accessible, but can I do it without removing the pan!
1) How do I remove the oil pump housing? I have almost every bolt off
already, but I lost use of my 10mm socket due to strippage so I quit for
the day with only two bolts to go and a few questions to be answered. Do
I really have to remove the sump(oil pan)?!? If I don't have to remove
the sump, do I have to drain the oil? THANK YOU!
2) Also, with all the talk of oiling the seals, gaskets before
installation, I am curious as to if there is any application of sealer,
grease, or something needed for a new water pump gasket. I thought I
read something in the Haynes about smearing grease on the rubber ring,
but I cannot find it now, so I am confused! ...as always!
Thanks again everyone!
