Oil cooler problems
Hi Audians!
I'm new to the list, so maybe first I should introduce myself.
My name is Aleksander Mierzwa. I live in Poland and I'm the proud owner
of '87 5KCST (FWD automatic). And now the questions.
It all started a year ago when one of the oil cooler hoses blew. What's
worse, when unscrewing the hoses the threads at both cooler fittings
were destroyed. I was very short of money then, so I ended fabricating
new fittings and welding them into cooler. Now the oil cooler leaks from
the fitting. Apparently, the welding must have cracked. I want to
replace the oil cooler and since the remaining oil cooler and
turbocharger hoses are VERY badly rusted, I want to replace them as
well. The dealer quoted me about $600 for oil cooler and about $100-150
for EACH of the hoses. Being a poor student, I can't afford it. I'm
going to let the hose shop fabricate new hoses to the existing fittings
and buy a used cooler. Unfortunately, I can't find it. I'm offered an -
what they claim to be - Audi 80 oil cooler. It's larger, but has the
right fittings. I think it doesn't matter what oil cooler I use, as far
as it fits into place, has right fittings and doesn't leak, am I right?
I don't know which fitting at the cooler I'm offered is inlet and which
is the outlet one. Does it matter? What if I confuse them? I'm also
afraid about unscrewing the hoses from turbocharger, the nuts are badly
rusted, anybody done this before? Sorry for the long post, I wanted to
make it all clear. Any help will be greatly appreciated, I have to make
decision in few days, I'm sick of having whole RF suspension covered
with oil.
Thanks in advance
Alex
