re: AM radio problems

Hi

I would pull the radio and ohm out between the antenna shield and the
center conductor. I had a problem last year where my AM reception dropped
to zero and FM would not pull a station in from more than 25 miles away.

The cause was at the crimp on the car side of the Antenna cable in the
roof where the pigtail connects off of the Fuba antenna. Apparently the
teflon insulation broke at the crimp, which allowed some of the strands of
shield to short to the center wires. At the radio it looked like a short to
the shield with power off. With radio on ( and power to antenna amp ) I was
seeing about 300 millivolts on the antenna wire. Probably just enough for
Some FM, but not enough for AM.

On the 90 Coupe Quattro, You can access this connection by removing the
center rear passenger light.

Subject: AM radio problems

Any of you had problems with AM radio reception? I have a stock
(FUBA?) roof mount/powered antennae in my wagon. For no apparent
reason, the AM reception suddenly dropped off. Can't figure out what
is wrong.

Unfortunately, living in the congested SF Bay area requires AM traffic
guidance.
