ur-q using oil

Hi folks,
The recent thread on this subject prompts me to ask....
any ideas whats wrong here?
ur-q 1985 94k miles, oil change every 4k using VAG quantum semi-synth
oil with two new filters each time.
Relativly low oil consumption (about 1 litre every 1k miles) when driven
calmly at any speed up to the max (fairly regular) but town driving is
another story. If I accelerate hard to anything past 3500rpm and then
back off sharply the cars behind disappear in a huge cloud of smoke. The
higher the revs the more smoke.
When I say 'disappear' I do not joke.  The most recent 200miles cost me
about 1.5 litres of oil.
I had the head off last year and replaced all the valve guides and stem
oil seals while in there so I dont think the problem is in this area but
I could be wrong.

Any suggestions?
