Are we talking about the "tink" sound that the worn links can make 
when driving over bumps. or are we talking more about a perceptable
"clunk" which can also be felt when turning the steering wheel?

I had the "clunk" problem, and thanks to Ian Duff, the solution cost
me nothing and about 5 minutes of my time...

The cause was the loosening of the 19mm? bolts that hold the tie rods
to the steering rack.  I tightened them and ....no more clunk!
