That Darned Brake Dust
Answering Christian's question with a question:
>I always laughed at those brake dust shields that keep dust from
>getting on your wheels and also prevent cool air from reaching the
>brakes. BUT . . .
>Does anyone want to talk me out of buying these . . .
There are, or used to be, replacement brake pads that reduced the
amount of dust build-up on wheels. I had them installed on the front
brakes of my 4KSQ at around 30K miles (circa 1988); they lasted
about 60K miles. When I replaced them at 90K, I forgot to ask for the
no-dust composition. Since then I have had the same problem as
Christian.
Are such pads still available? Are they considered reputable? I recall
being told they might be noisier than original equipment pads, but I
never noticed much difference. Brake performance also seemed
unaffected.
