re: synthetic oil

Just a couple of data points:

I started my 1990 200T on synthetic oil at 60K when I bought the car. I
had been nicely maintained prior to the purchase, and I've seen absolutley
no sign of leakage or oil consumption since. I've put almost 20K on it in
the two years since I switched it over, btw. No lifter noise with either
Castrol Syntec or Mobil One.

Also, despite warnings to the contrary, I switched my Range Rover over to
synthetic at 42K (mileage at which I bought the truck). I did a short
interval on this one. It's unclear to me whether this one was well
maintained, tho...it certainly didn't get an enthusiast's
treatment...but did get regular service. Again, no problems...other than
the usual Land Rover seepage :)

I'll probably find not one but two pools of expensive synthetic oil in my
garage tomorrow morning, huh?
