Engine compartment cleaning

I've actually done mine twice in four years, but in both cases it was 
immediately prior to a fairly major tear-down - one for the fuel injection, and 
once for new lifters.
 
I just don't like undertaking _any_ disturbance in the engine bay without a 
good reason and a contingency day or two to put things right.
