This method of using the unlit propane torch is probably one of the 
safer ways to find a vacuum leak.  Propane has a much narrower range 
of ignition (propane/air ratio) than most volatiles (especially 
compared to gasoline (thats petrol to you)).  Doing this test is 
probably as risky as filling @ a self serve station! :)

  It is also cheap, readily available, and safe and easy to store.  

The only potential hazard is that propane gas is heavier than air, 
thus one should not use it in a envoirnment which would allow it to 
pool in low lying areas (ie basements).
