I agree with you on the "non-interference" comments.
My Supra Turbo, like our A4q 2.8 is supposedly a non-interference type 
engine (DOHC). However, some of our Supra list members experiences show 
otherwise (valves, piston damage). As you say a broken belt at 1200 rpm 
probably wouldn't do much of anything, at 6000+ rpm with everything 
stretching to the limit...well. Although my car only had 36k on it in 
1994, I replaced the timing belt anyway. Rubber/plastic deteriorate 
with age as well as useage!
