You have found Audi's Procon-ten system, which is designed to work in
the event of a major frontal impact to snug the seatbelts and pull the
steering column away from the driver. The laws and public fervor for
airbags caused Audi to discontinue the system after a couple of years.
That is too bad IMHO, as my opinion is that a passive system that uses
the inertia of the heavy parts of the car for safety is far and away
better than poking an explosive device under my nose ...
