Exhaust Manifold Question

My '89 200 QTW is at the car doc; I had a leak in the exhaust
manifold. 

Upon closer inspection, the mechanic says that the exhaust manifold is
CRACKED and two studs need to be drilled out. He says that Audi had a
history of problems with the 5000's one piece manifold-apparently the
length caused it to crack.

The replacement is a two-piece manifold. Cost is about $800.00. I
guess this isn't that unreasonable since machining cost $300 to $500. 

Anyone had experiences like this? Is there a history of recalls?

Had my 200 done recently. Couldnt find any recall. 90 200 had fed.
emissions warrantee
7years 70,000 miles. Check warrantee book to verify.  Injectors also
covered but I recall for a shorter period.
