The engine code isn't in the VIN - it's stamped into the engine block.
 
What Bentley is saying is that "year C" cars had the 2.3 litre engine.  
However, as we all know, there are many exceptions to every Audi rule.

Check the letters stamped into the engine itself - it's the only way to be 
sure.
