Yea, this is what I was talking about when I referred to the "Mysterious
evaporating lubricant" in my orig. post, just being glib.  I have an inkling
that it was never changed when this TSB was issued.  So does anybody have any
BTDT's on synthetic gear oils?  Recommendations, or brands to avoid?  I've heard
from the VW list that some Redline products aren't good, contrary to popular
belief, and that the GL-5 rating is also not always the best for an older car
(something about the sulphur component attacking seals?).  Anyone?  Anyone?
