injector inserts

What is the level of difficulty/necessity in replacing the injector
inserts on a 2226cc CIS-E engine?

My engine mysteriously and recalcitrantly pings, despite all my attempts
to fix it (actually, I think it is echoes of the Audi gods laughing, but
to us humans it sounds like engine knocking...).  I have correctly set
the mixture, camshaft timing, ignition timing, and cannot find any
vacuum leaks.  Next on the list is to check the injector patterns (these
injectors are 70K miles old) and change the o-rings and inserts (I think
at least one insert is broken).
