Eric & Dave:

Just had the same fuel line replaced on my 93 S4.  It would smell
in the passenger compartment during the first 10-15 minutes.
Later things would be fine.

It *IS* a lot of work.  The steering rack has to come out.
 Luckily for me, it wasn't a problem since  the fuel line was 
covered under the 2 year Audi Assured warranty that came with 
the car when I purchased it in Mar '97.

I never would have bought such a complex used car w/o the warranty.
The S4 is wonderful, however there is a lot than can go wrong.

At the dealer they were upfront enough to admit that it
is a relatively common failure (ouch!).  The time estimate
is correct and the mechanic had to hustle to make it.
