fuel assembly

Hi,

This might be a very stupid question but I am just starting on the 
road to self-help. Partly necessity :( and more interest. (I got my
Bentley's yesterday).

My first operation is to replace the fuel pump. When I poked 
under the car I saw three pieces. I think I know which is the fuel
pump and which is the filter (see what I mean by "just starting" :).
In between these two pieces is a third very rusty object.
Its about 3" high. What is this supposed to be ?
