I've done this, and it's no fun.

I had a custom face plate built to wrap around the new indash unit I got 
(alpine, but would be the same size for any head unit).

The problem is that the head unit is integrated with the speakers (and 
amps built into speakers). If you change the head unit, you have to 
replace the speakers (and add an amp if you want more power than the head 
unit provides).

This makes changing the head unit much more expensive than you would 
think.

But when you're done, you have the stereo system you want.
