When I worked in a bike shop (over 15 years ago), on average I would deal with 
1 bike rack incident a month during the summer months. These varied between 
low bridges, garages and best of the lot, the unguided ballistic bike rack - 
in one case, 60 mph on the A57, car turned left, rack kept going straight on.
Just about every one of racks and their contents were complete write-offs, and 
the damage to the cars was often quite serious.

When I took my bikes to races, they travelled inside the car - mind you, I did 
drive a Rover SD1, when the back seat was down I could (and did) get a 
fridge-freezer in there. I just havent tried with my Ur quattro.
