It is on the ur-quattro.  Well, a loud buzzer on the MB and very late WRs, and 
a voice that says: "Check oil level" on earlier cars.
 
No, there isn't a level sensor in the sump.  The English message is a direct 
translation of the idiomatic German phrase: "Oelstand Kontrollieren."
