The 3,5/4.5 SL designation phenomenon was short lived.  When the SL was
first introduced in Europe, it had a 3.5 liter engine.  For the US intro,
I believe they  started out from the first with the 4.5 liter.  The
insignia on the first few "new" SL's didn't catch up with the actual
engine right away.

My mom's '73, production number 8582 which was delivered to us on
1-11-73, had the correct insignia.  I think the very first ones over 
were model year '72 and only some of those had the 350 insignia.  I've
seen some of them badged with only the 350SL and some with that plus 4.5
on the right side.  Not sure if the 4.5 came from the factory or the
dealer.
