I don't suppose the coolant had been drained for any reason?
 
The MB engine needs bleeding when the coolant is refilled.  There's a little 
brass cap on the main radiator for this purpose.  If you _don't_ bleed it, it 
will suddenly bleed itself on the next sharp left turn you do.
 
Get the engine pretty warm, and chuck it about a bit.  Do you get the "top 
three segment flash" from the temperature display?
