Sunroof

Hello All
 We have a 1983 UrQ Coupe. The car has been a real joy since we obtained it
early this spring.
 But, we now have an inoperative sunroof! We just get a "grinding" when we try
to open it. It is a manual roof and it feels like the drive pinion may be
stripped. Is this a real complex operation? Is it best to remove the entire
assembly to repair it? Any help would be most appreciated.
 Also, Is this the same assembly used in the standard Coupes?
 I have enjoyed the list and have really picked up a lot of information. I also
enjoyed meeting some of you at the Pikes Peak event.
