And the answer is..... a cracked head.
A crack from a waterway into number 5, a big crack between the valve seats in 
number 5, a hairline crack between the valve seats in number 3 and another in 
number 1.

So, where can I get a new head for a MB engine? I dont need a cam or valve 
gear etc, just a plain head.
I also need a camshaft timing belt pully 'cos I've found a crack in that too.
I tell you, that 2nd hand 20v head that I saw on Friday is starting to look 
more attractive by the minute. :-)
