Which engine to use, 83' 5000 turbo engine, 86?

Todd,

I don't have the exact details on the original first
generation 5000T engine that was used in the 1981-83 model
year 5000T vehicles, but I believe the original 81-83 5000T
engine did not use an intercooler and was only rated at 130
HP. It is my understanding that this first generation 5000T
was the basis for what was used in the ur-Q but the ur-Q
utilized an intercooler and higher boost pressure (~1.8
bar) to get ~ 160HP.

The second generation turbo engine used in the 84-85 5000T
("KH" designated engine) was the 2.1 liter unit with 8.3 to
1 compression, 1.42 bar boost. It used an intercooler, WG
solenoid, MAC-07 ECU, single knock sensor and made ~140 HP.

The third generation 5000T engine ("MC" designation code)
used in the 86-88 5000T/Q's and the early 89 200TQ's is
your best bet. The engine number on the side of the block
will show the engine designation code. This engine was used
from 9/85 until around 10/88 and should be widely
available. This is the 2226 cc engine that made 160 HP
stock and was much improved over the earlier engines as it
had bigger displacement, water cooled K26 turbo, 7.8 to 1
compression, and a more sophisticated engine control unit,
(MAC11 ECU). There are several people on this list who can
upgrade this MAC11 ECU with a new EPROM for more boost/HP
and there are some people that offer turbo/exhaust upgrades
for this engine as well (Scott J. aka PDQSHP)

The last 10V turbo engine that was used in the 1989-91 200
Turbo and 1989/90 200TQ's had
higher compression 8:4 to 1, dual knock sensors, smaller
K24 turbo (similar to what was used in 91 200TQ 20V and S4
20V engine), different camshaft and slightly different CIS
fuel system. These engines have better low end response but
give up a little of the high end pull that the K26 turbo MC
engine offers. These engines are not as widely available as
the 86-88 1/2 engines. These dual knock sensor, higher
compression engines used the same MC engine designation, so
check the side of the engine to be sure if you end up
looking for the 86-88 1/2 MC version.

Make sure you check the engine designation out and verify
what you are buying as I know of one person who bought an
1985 5000T "KH" style engine thinking that they were
getting the 160HP MC style.

>Haudi everyone,
>Does anyone know which version of the 5-cyl engine the 83'
5000 turbo has in it. Is it the same as >the newer models
like 86' or is it the solid lifter version out of the URQ.
Or is it the old 2.1 liter unit? >Just curious as I need a
new engine in my 4000q and am considering a swap for a
turbo or if not at >least for a 2.3L engine out of an 87'
coupe. I just want to know if this is a good engine or if
I want the >newer one. There is an 83' 5000 turbo for sale
here for 500 bucks
