Apple Hill RallyCross

Hello Audiphiles-
Sorry for the low Audi content, but for those out there who love to
drive, you missed a genuinely great event in New York this weekend. The
inaugural Apple Hill Rally Cross was by all accounts _fun_ It was held
on a large field on private property, with a course marked off by cones
and tire pylons that was about .6 miles long. There were 28 drivers
split up into three classes of which there were three groups each.
Depending on your car and the modifications done to it, you could be
entered into one of three classes: PRO Rally, Modified and Stock. In
these classes, there were three groups, four wheel drive, two wheel
drive under 2 litre and two wheel drive over 2 litre. As such, there was
a "smattering" of cars that turned out for the event, including several
Suzuki Swifts, Golfs and Jettas, as well as a few Audis and a Nissan
Pathfinder. Unexpectadly, the Audis took all of the top spots in the
three classes:
Pro Rally class: Ivan Orisek/Olga Orisek in there impressive 350bhp
4000Q for an overall win at 4.48 minutes; Modified class; me in my coupe
for second overall at 4.62 minutes; Stock Class: Jerzy Wacker in another
4KQ in third overall at 4.70 miuntes.

This was a very "safe" event, there were no incidents, except quite a
few grinding gears, especially some of the VW's going from second into
reverse *ouch* instead of first... Other than Constantine taking out the
finish gate entirely in his 200TQ Pro Rally car, there were no other
"situations": just a fun time for everyone present.

We are getting ready to do it again in October- with a few revisions to
an already great idea- including a lower entry fee of $40, a longer
course, hopefully two courses, and an earlier start time to get more
runs in for your dollar.

Rallycross is a great thing to do if you want to get a taste of real Pro
Rally, as well as have some fun competetion on a loose surface with
fellow minded auto enthusiasts. All you need for a great time is a
helmet, a mechanically sound car, preferably some M+S tires and forty
bucks... beleive me, it's a ball!
