Welcome to the gang :-)

Don't believe this. I've never heard about high failure rate of A4's
autoboxes. Those are relatively new cars (especially 1.8Ts) and I doubt
if any of them already developed any serious problems. Some people claim
that V8 quattro transmissions fail unusually often. However, there are
many V8s with very high mileage that developed no problems with
transmission and whatsoever. Besides, this is the same ZF-made tranny
that is used in some BMWs. You will see many old 5000s junkyarded
because of broken automatic transmission. I believe this is mainly
because of negligence. For unknown reasons Audi did not recomment
changing fluid on these cars as a part of normal maintenance. Also many
of them were broken because of leaking differentials. With frequent
fluid changes and keeping close eye to differential oil level they can
last forever.
