My car also has the slot for a fuse in the top of the fuel pump relay; the
manual says that the codes can no longer be read by inserting the fuse ('91
200q 3B engine with motronic ignition)

More specifically, it implies that you have a K-Jetronic controller and not a
Motronic controller. The codes in this system are volatile and will be
erased
if the ignition is switched off. The procedure is:
