Self-adjusting (disappearing) handbrake

Can any list member please throw some light onto my handbrake puzzle?

The H/B on my 1990 20v CQ self adjusts itself to zero after a couple of weeks. The lever gradually pulls higher and higher each time it is applied until there is no more H/B. It is caused by the operating levers on the side of the rear calipers not returning to their stops when the H/B is released.

The return springs on the calipers are present and correct and appear to be strong enough. The cables are well greased and free from resistance.

I have previously removed the rear calipers, cleaned them up, lubricated and freed the H/B levers as much as possible and although they were a little stiff, they were by no means seized nor were they 'finger loose'.

Should the hydraulic pressure from application of the foot brake (when the H/B is released) assist the H/B levers back to their stops or should the springs do all of the work?

Is it time for new rear calipers or are they serviceable?

TIA ..
