Trim levels, mainly.  Quattros (88,89) have only 5cyl engines.
The only 90 with a 4cyl was the 1988 with automatic tranny, as I recall.
I think all 90s have leather as well, again in those years.

Later 90s (90 and up) were different.  The V6 showed up in 92 I think.
