4kcsq guage question

Ok, you can tell I'm really moving along with my 87 4k restore 'cause
I'm asking petty questions now...

On the center gauge below the radio, I have the diff locks, battery
juice and oil temp meter. All work, but the oil temperature meter can't
be accurate. It never moves up more than one or two notches from the
bottom, even after a 2 hour highway drive. What gives? I have no idea
where to begin debugging this... is there a thermometer somewhere that
could be bad?
