Joe,

     The 016 Audi gearboxes were never easy to get into first gear...  The
first gear weighs about 5 pounds and the little syncro has to spin it up to
mainshaft speed before the gearbox will engage first... I tried to solve this
problem on my 5000csqt by replacing the oil with Redline synthetic but it had
little if any improvement.. I seem to get a hair better gas mileage though...
 Assuming your linkage if fine..  I'd live with it unless it won't go in
first at all.. the remedy to the problem it to tear the box down and replace
the syncros, and possibly gears...
