Fuel Mixture

I have a 81 Audi Coupe 2.2 L. The car was running fine until I got some
grud in the gas tank. I took it to a mechanic and he started with
rebuilding the head, new injectors etc. A very long story involved in the
repair. But the problem is now it runs very rich. You can smell the gas in
the exhaust. 

I have adjusted the idle mixture, re-adjusted the timing ( which he had at
TDC). I have tried just about everything, but can not seem to lean it out. 

Any ideas.
