Auto Transmission

This question concerns my mom's '84 5K with 64K, and its auto tranny.
I noticed yesterday after driving it from her house to mine, that after
some highway driving, about 60 miles at ~ 70mph, that once I got in
town, the auto trans hesitated before engaging when starting out at stop
lights.  The engine would rev, from me pushing the accelerator, and then
finally engage, like someone trying to smoke the tires in a standard
tranny.

Does she need a tranny job, or maybe just a fluid change in the tranny?
