Catalytic Converter

RHL> What would cause a catalytic converter to break up? I thought these
RHL> things lasted forever, unless the car isn't running properly. My
RHL> mom's 1984 5K, with 64K has the distinct clatter of platinum moving
RHL> around in the cc shell. What things should I check for? Do I need a
RHL> mechanic with a machine to check codes to see if it is running
RHL> properly? She does only drive this car less than 1 mile each way, to
 RHL> and from work.

The cats do break up, and from personal experience, they
have a tendency to block the rest of the exhaust. I'd
recommend gutting the kitty (what's left of it) and
getting it out the rest of the exhaust, if it's truly
"kitty litter" you're hearing, then it's already migrated
down to the rest of the system. My kitty broke up, and
clogged the system to where the car would lose
power on corners, and eventually died altogether. Only thing
I had with me was a pair of vice grips. I pulled out the
oxygen sensor to get home, gutted the kitty and she's
been passing inspection just fine ever since. I've
been meaning to buy that new cat for a while now, just
haven't gotten around to it yet.....car sounds alot better
      with the gutted cat too.

The kind of driving your mother does is the hardest on an
exhaust, and the car in general for that matter, you should
"italian tuneup" the car by giving it a good auto-bahn
run and get everything up to temp at least once a week.

      BCNU,
