need help on vw

Again I know its not an Audi, but its close.

Sometimes the car wont start, disconnecting the DPR (differential 
pressure regulator) will cause the car to start.

Once started the car runs very poor, can smell raw gas in the 
exhaust.

Disconnecting the potentiometer causes the car to run fine.

It was suggested that the DPR was bad, Swapped it for the one in my 
Audi 1.8.  The problem remained, however my Audi still runs fine.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I really need to get 
this thing figured out, my son needs it for school this Friday.
