Is the underside of the gearbox/differential wet?
If oil gets there from an engine source, it's invariably black and horrible.
If it's leaking transmission lubricant, it's nice and clear. Makes the bottom
of the transmission look bright and wet.

Absolutely. You'd be amazed how much can hide up the back there.
