Elliott,

Your battery exploded due to the presence of hydrogen gas.
You had a worn out battery that you tried to keep going.
It probably had a shorted cell.  Then when the system tries
to charge the battery, it has a different number of cells
to charge and overcharged the hell out of it, creating hydrogen.
When the car sat it accumulated inside the battery head space and
leaked out slowely.  When you came back you created a spark, and
that, as they say, is all she wrote.
